Epsom Salts! One of my most favourite things to use. They are absolutely wonderful and can be used for a variety of things, from constipation to assisting with heavy metal detoxing, to relaxing muscles, and much much more.
Epsom salts have been used to treat a variety of health ailments by numerous cultures for centuries. Epsom salt baths have astounding health benefits and are an excellent way to de stress and detoxify the whole body. These salts are not just beneficial for healing the human body though, they are useful as household cleaners and have a good place in the garden too!
The name Epsom salts comes from its origination of a bitter saline spring found at Epsom in Surrey, England. Unlike other naturally occurring salts, Epsom salts are formed from a pure mineral compound containing magnesium and sulfate. Both magnesium and sulfate stimulate detoxification pathways in the body.
Epsom Salt Baths can help prevent Magnesium Deficiency. More than 325 enzymes in our body require magnesium to function properly. Magnesium is key for stimulating nerve and muscle function, limiting inflammation, and improving oxygenation and blood through throughout the body. Many believe that we are all deficient in Magnesium, due to poor soil quality. In fact there’s a wonderful resource in the form of a book called ‘The Magnesium Miracle’ by Dr Carolyn Dean who believes that, ‘without magnesium we are operating with the power turned off.’
Magnesium and sulfate are both fine consistency minerals that can be absorbed through our skin and taken up into the bloodstream. Just as your skin perspires to remove toxins through your pores, these same pores also allow minerals in. If you think back to high school biology you may recall the process of reverse osmosis to understand the process which moves toxins out of the body and pulls magnesium and sulfate inward. When you soak in bathwater containing epsom salts, reverse osmosis occurs to help cleanse your body.
Other symptoms such as constipation can also be relieved by taking Epsom salt baths. In fact this was a very common remedy in households in my Grandparents generation. Magnesium salt promotes gastric activity in the intestines which provides a laxative effect. The stimulation of movement in the gut and colon further promotes detoxification processes.
Sulfates are essential for the optimal health of joints, skin, and nervous tissue. When absorbed through the skin, sulfates can promote the health of these tissues. Sulfates also bind toxic impurities in the liver to render them less hazardous. Specifically, the sulfur component of sulfate salts is what binds to toxins, ensuring their elimination from the body.
The once fat-soluble toxin stored in the liver tissue is metabolized, becoming water soluble. It can then be effectively excreted as waste in urine. This detoxification pathway is referred to as Phase 2 liver detoxification, also known as the conjugation pathway.
Phase 2 liver detoxification is dependent on co-factors such as sulfur to be absorbed by the body. In other words, without sulfur or other substances which bind to impurities, toxins from drugs and the environment accumulate and remain stored in the liver, causing dysfunction. When Phase 2 detoxification pathways are impaired, individuals may have symptoms of nausea, headaches and migraines, chronic fatigue, infections, chemical sensitivities, and bloating.
Taken internally to relieve constipation – dose will vary for weight – best to research online and find what you’re happy with on this – some may take 1 teaspoon dissolved in water, some may take less.
Liver flushing – they are crucial in liver flushing. I personally use these ones for ingesting.
Epsom Bath salts – incredible detoxifying bath soak. Pour ½-1 c into the bath and dissolve. Add some pure essential oils to the mix too if you so desire!
CEASE Therapy – Epsom Salt baths are a key part of the CEASE therapy protocol. This is someone I went through with my son. The difference it would make daily was phenomenal.
Magnesium oil – DIY ½ distilled water, boiled – add in ½ c of Epsom salts and dissolve. Allow to cool then place in a bottle. Using Distilled water extends the life of the oil.
